WordPress is the most well-known platform for creating websites or blogs. 40% of all existing websites are created with WordPress. Anyone can use it and edit it for free, it is accessible by anyone. It is an essential tool because it simplifies the management of your website content without knowing anything about programming and without being a developer.

Unlike a few years ago, thanks to the continuous modifications and thanks to the huge amount of plugins and themes, with the WordPress platform you can create any type of website.

Even if you don’t know anything about theme programming, you can easily edit your website thanks to:

  • Themes: change the appearance of your site
  • Plugins: they edit the functioning of your site. Plugins can be of any size: from the smallest like a contact form, to something bigger like an eCommerce store.

A plugin can be called a module in other very similar applications, but the definition remains the same. One of its main purposes, is to allow the user to perform actions in a different way than those provided by WordPress, or to implement new operations.

An example of the first type is to add user roles to WordPress in addition to those already customary; in this case, therefore, is improved a feature already present. Similarly, the slideshows that are managed by a particular plugin, belong to the second type, since WordPress does not allow this operation is then implemented.

Plugin activation and deactivation

All plugins are activated and deactivated in the administration section of WordPress. When a plugin is activated, all the code is included in the WordPress execution flow, allowing the plugin to operate both in the interface and “inside” the site.

The same does not apply to deactivation. When a plugin is deactivated, WordPress removes it and behaves as if the plugin never existed.

A plugin can make any kind of change to WordPress. This gives rise to bugs that affect its vulnerability: if a plugin has a problem, WordPress will have a problem too. That’s why one of the troubleshooting protocols in WordPress involves disabling plugins in order to find the problematic one.

Free and paid plugins

Although plugins, according to some, should be free, a considerable chunk of plugins are paid. The major difference between the two lies in the updating of plugins. While the free plugins made available by WordPress are all automatically updatable, the paid ones are not always and you are often forced to install the new version manually.
